CROWN THINNING & LIFTING

Professional crown thinning and lifting across Surrey and London.

ATS provides carefully planned crown thinning and lifting for homeowners, businesses and local authorities. Our experienced arborists selectively remove branches to improve light, manage density or provide suitable clearance beneath the crown.

When thinning or lifting may help

  • A dense crown restricting light or airflow
  • Low branches obstructing paths or roads
  • Clearance required above gardens or buildings
  • Selected branches requiring careful management

SELECTIVE CROWN MANAGEMENT

Improving light and clearance while retaining form.

Crown thinning and lifting remove selected branches without unnecessarily reducing the tree’s overall height or spread. ATS specifies work according to the tree, the site and the clearance required.

PLANNED CROWN WORK

Selective pruning for a clear purpose.

Crown thinning removes selected internal branches to reduce density while retaining the crown’s overall size and outline. Crown lifting removes selected lower branches to increase clearance beneath the tree.

ATS assesses the tree before recommending either method. The number, size and position of branches removed are carefully controlled to achieve the required result without unnecessary pruning.

THINNING & LIFTING APPLICATIONS

Targeted crown work for different sites.

The correct approach depends on the tree and the required outcome. ATS identifies where selective branch removal can provide a practical benefit.

Crown thinning

Removing selected internal growth to reduce crown density while retaining its overall dimensions.

Crown lifting

Removing selected lower branches to increase the clear space between the ground and the crown.

Road and path clearance

Managing lower growth affecting vehicles, pedestrians, driveways, entrances or other access routes.

Building clearance

Removing appropriate lower or internal branches affecting roofs, windows, lighting or building access.

Garden light management

Selective thinning where a dense crown is limiting light penetration to gardens or surrounding planting.

Balanced branch selection

Careful distribution of pruning throughout the crown to avoid creating an uneven or unbalanced result.

ASSESSMENT FIRST

Choosing the right crown-management method.

Thinning, lifting and reduction produce different results. Thinning manages density, lifting creates clearance beneath the crown and reduction decreases its overall height or spread.

ATS identifies which method is appropriate and explains what can realistically be achieved. We also consider the tree’s future growth, structural balance and any permissions that may be required before work begins.

HOW THE WORK IS PLANNED

A selective process from assessment to completion.

ATS confirms the clearance or density issue, recommends suitable crown work and plans each stage around the tree and the site.

01

Initial enquiry

Tell us about the tree, its location and the light, density or clearance issue you would like to address.

02

Site assessment

ATS assesses the crown, tree condition, surroundings, access and the practical clearance required.

03

Work specification

We recommend thinning, lifting or other appropriate work and provide a clear written quotation.

04

Planning and tree work

The appropriate team, access equipment and working methods are organised before work begins.

05

Completion

The specified crown work is completed carefully, arisings are removed and the site is left safe and tidy.

CLIENT FEEDBACK

We were very impressed by the work carried out to crown lift our oak tree. The team were helpful, friendly and extremely efficient.

CROWN THINNING & LIFTING FAQS

Questions about crown thinning and lifting.

Clear answers about managing crown density, improving clearance and arranging appropriate tree work.

What is the difference between crown thinning and crown lifting?

Crown thinning removes selected branches throughout the canopy to reduce density. Crown lifting removes selected lower branches to increase the clear space beneath the crown.

Will crown thinning make the tree smaller?

Not normally. Crown thinning reduces density while broadly retaining the tree’s overall height and spread. Crown reduction is the method used when its overall dimensions need to decrease.

How high can a tree crown be lifted?

The suitable clearance depends on the tree’s age, structure, species and location. Removing too many lower branches can affect stability and form, so ATS recommends a proportionate specification.

Is permission required before the work?

Permission may be required for a protected tree or one situated within a conservation area. ATS can advise what should be checked with the local authority before work is arranged.

NEED MORE LIGHT OR CLEARANCE?

Arrange an assessment of your tree’s crown.

Tell ATS about the tree, its location and the light, density or clearance issue. We’ll assess whether crown thinning, lifting or another approach is appropriate.
